For two decades, the team at Releasing Writers (formerly thinkSRSD) has been translating the science of writing into classroom practice — across schools, districts, and even internationally.
The science of writing has deep Canadian roots. This body of research traces back over 50 years to foundational Canadian researchers whose work gave rise to the entire movement — Meichenbaum’s groundbreaking original work (1971) preceded and directly inspired Deshler’s Strategy Instruction Model (1981), Englert’s Cognitive Strategies Instruction (1983), Harris’ SRSD framework (1985), and Laud’s Releasing Writers (2006), among further evolving models. Today, Canadian researchers such as Perry (2025) bring this work full circle, studying the impact of this model in Canadian classrooms.
At Releasing Writers, we also draw broadly on Olson’s Cognitive Strategies Toolkit, Haynes’ Structured Written Expression, Datchuk’s sentence-level research, University of MO’s Data-Based Instruction, and Truckenmiller’s writing assessment.
What sets Releasing Writers apart is what we do with this research. We’ve partnered with researchers, won federal grants, and studied our own impact — all in pursuit of one goal: a light-lift, high-yield approach that works in real classrooms. Science of writing is taking root across Canada, and Releasing Writers is honored to carry forward the Canadian origins of this work in support of that growth.

About Us
tReleasing Writers is the community of teachers and researchers who use and study practical applications of the Science of Writing. We offer in-person professional development and e-learning courses taught by teachers with decades of experience using our framework. Since offering the very first open enrollment course in SRSD in 2008, our group has grown to lead courses on multiple evidence-based practices for teaching writing and to integrate these.
